NIPT implementation via Peridos: fast results in a complex landscape

Together with RIVM and MedicalPHIT, we delivered a fully operational NIPT implementation via Peridos on a tight deadline, along with a national terminology dictionary that still sets the standard today.

23 May 2022

Our collaboration with RIVM around the Peridos system gave rise to a series of sub-projects, each contributing in its own way to better data exchange in prenatal care. One of those projects still stands out: the implementation of NIPT, in late 2016.

The challenge

The objective was clear: NIPT referrals and results needed to flow through Peridos. That may sound straightforward, but it requires precise alignment between systems, standards, and stakeholders. The deadline was firm: a working environment by 1 April, not a prototype.

MedicalPHIT took on the project lead. Interoplab provided the technical and content expertise to make sure referrals and results could be exchanged reliably through Peridos. That meant applying the right standards, defining messages accurately, and ensuring everything worked as a coherent whole.

Our role

Interoplab played a key role in establishing the technical agreements that underpin the message exchange. Our PHIT experts contributed to the development of a national terminology dictionary for the prenatal domain: a structured set of definitions based on the HL7 standard.

That dictionary is not a one-time deliverable. The definitions are still in active use, and the messages derived from it continue to play a role in the ongoing standardisation of information exchange in maternity care.

Result

The deadline was met. The environment went live on 1 April, on a timeline that left little margin for error. But the lasting result is about more than that date. It remains one of the finest collaborative projects we have been part of: not just because of the pace, but because of the combination of technical craftsmanship, strong partnership, and a concrete impact that is still felt today.

“Fast results in a short time. It remains one of the finest projects we have done together.”
