Enabling secure patient data access with MedMij

Interoplab supports the MedMij framework with a robust, standards-based testing platform that accelerates vendor certification, ensures conformance, and evolves alongside the program’s architecture.

The challenge

MedMij defines the national trust framework that allows Dutch citizens to access their personal health data securely and reliably. To realize this vision, the program foundation needed a dependable and future-ready test environment. One that ensures vendors meet strict technical and security requirements without compromising ease of use or trust.

Our role

Interoplab delivers and maintains the interoperability platform that forms the backbone of MedMij’s test infrastructure. Our work includes:

  • A scalable reference environment for vendor testing and validation
  • Automated conformance testing using our Conformancelab tooling
  • Realistic simulators that reflect production-level behavior
  • A secure OTAP (Development, Test, Acceptance, Production) environment
  • Direct support for MedMij’s evolving architecture and framework design We also developed and maintain a test ‘Stelselnode’, the core network component that governs connectivity within the MedMij ecosystem.

With Interoplab, MedMij gained a flexible, future-proof test infrastructure that continues to support trusted, citizen-centered data access across the Netherlands. Together, we turn complex standards into everyday, reliable data exchange.

How it supports interoperability

Using Interoplab’s platform, vendors can self-test their systems against real-world scenarios. An interceptor module inspects and validates each exchange, highlighting deviations and offering actionable feedback. This speeds up onboarding, reduces friction, and ensures systems meet MedMij’s expectations before going live. MedMij retains full control of validation, with the ability to test simulators internally before exposing them to vendors. Maintaining oversight and trust at every step.

Outcome

  • Established the national reference environment for all MedMij vendors
  • Reduced vendor onboarding time through automation and structured feedback
  • Delivered the production-grade Stelselnode for secure, governed connectivity
  • Actively contributed to MedMij’s FHIR standards and service specifications
  • Supported hackathons and innovation events across the Dutch eHealth ecosystem
